Obituary of Gertrudes R. (Sousa) Vieira

Gertrudes R. Vieira, 76, of West Palm Beach Florida and formerly of Peabody, died Thursday at her home following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of the late Manuel Assis Vieira. Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Faustino and Iria (Ramos) Sousa. She was raised and educated in Portugal and in 1967 she immigrated with her family to Peabody where she has lived for over 40 years before moving to Florida to be with her daughter in 2008. While living in Peabody, she was employed as an assembler for Alpha Industries in Woburn for many years before she retired. She enjoyed cooking and was known for her famous homemade Portuguese Sweet Bread. Gertrude also enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Our Lady of Fatima Church Choir, and she enjoyed many family and friends gatherings at her house in Peabody. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dionisio and Robyn Vieira of Wakefield and Maria Filomena Vieira of West Palm Beach, Fl, a brother, João Faustino of Portugal and by her two loving grandchildren, Isabel and Audrey Vieira of Wakefield. Her visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
