Obituary of Dorothy L. (Wiggin) Reid

Peabody, February 28, 2002. Dorothy L. (Wiggin) Reid, 76, of Tuckers Ct, Peabody, died late Thursday evening at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington following a brief illness. She was the wife of Charles H. Reid, Jr. with whom she shared over 55 years of marriage. Born in Exeter, New Hampshire, she was the daughter of the late Paul & Elizabeth (Cromey) Wiggin. She had lived in Peabody for the past 60 years where she was a graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1943. Her career at the Peabody Chapter of the American Red Cross spanned over 25 years, the last ten as Executive Director prior to her retirement. During the Vietnam War she tirelessly assisted service men and women and their families. She was active in community and Church organizations including Treasurer of Peabody Visiting Nurse Association, a member of the Peabody Women’ s Club and the Benevolent Society and a Girl Scout Leader. At the Second Congregational Church in South Peabody she was the editor of the Chronicle Newspaper, Church collector, and a member of the Couples Club. She was an avid reader, full of adventure, loved life to the fullest and enjoyed traveling and being with her family at their summer home in Northern Maine. Besides her loving husband of 55 years, she is survived by a son, Thomas A. Reid of Peabody; a daughter and a son-in-law, Carol L. Reid & Allen L. Townsend of Andover; a brother, Donald Wiggin of Chelmsford; a foster brother, Frederick Leavitt of Pocasset; 2 grandsons, Justin & Stuart Townsend of Andover. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at the Second Congregational Church, Maple St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Expressions of Sympathy can be sent to the South Branch of the Peabody Institute Library, 78 Lynn St., Peabody, MA 01960.
