Obituary of Joseph P. Powers

Joseph P. Powers, 79 years, beloved husband of Sophie P. (Bitchell) Powers of Peabody died Thursday evening at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington after a brief illness. Mr. Powers was born in Lynn son of the late Patrick and Delia (Keville) Powers. He was raised in Peabody attended St. John’ s Elementary School and graduated from Peabody High School class of 1941. He was a lifelong resident of Peabody. He was a WWII veteran serving in the United States Navy aboard the destroyer escort Montpelier in the South Pacific. Mr. Powers was employed for 26 years as a stationary fireman at Salem State College until his retirement in 1986. After retiring his fill his days with cooking, gardening and language lessons in french and german and was an avid reader. He was a member of the V.F.W. Fidelity Post #1011 in Peabody. In addition to his wife of 53 years he is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia A. Powers of Peabody and Teresa M. and Gary D. Ciavola of Beverly; a brother, John F. Powers of Beverly; a granddaughter, Mia Ciavola of Beverly; three cousins, Francis and Jean Kevill of England and W. Corcoran of Ireland and several nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held Tuesday at 8 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody location 978-531-0472 followed a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Ann Church, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Monday 4 - 8 p.m. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Memorial contributions may be made to the Haven from Hunger, P. O.
