Obituary of Clarice (Poole) Andrews

Clarice (Poole) Andrews, 89, beloved wife of the late Joseph Andrews, passed away peacefully on Wednesday April 3, 2013 at her home in Brooksby Village. She was born to the late Thomas Henry Poole and Evelyn Lord Poole in Monson, ME. She was raised in Greenville, ME, where Clarice was the Valedictorian of her high school class. A life-long learner, Clarice received her Registered Nurse degree from the New England Deaconess School of Nursing in Boston. She served one year as a Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, and was on her way to the Philippines when the war ended. Clarice returned to complete her bachelor degree with a B.S. in Nursing from Simmons College in Boston on the GI Bill. She married Joseph F. Andrews in 1948 in Boston, and nurtured their six children before continuing her education earning a Masters Degree in Nursing from Boston University and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Community Health from BU. Clarice shared her love of nursing as a teacher inspiring many students along the way. She was a Clinical Instructor at the N.E. Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, the Melrose-Wakefield School of Nursing, Catherine Laboure School of Nursing, as an Assistant Professor in the Master’s program for Nursing Administration at University of Lowell, and teaching Community Health Nursing at University College, Northeastern University. Mrs. Andrews was employed as the Director of the Melrose District Nursing Services with the VNA for three years, followed by 15 years as the Director of the Malden Community Nursing Association. Clarice believed in community service and served as a board member for the North Metropolitan Homemaker-Home Health Aide Service, Inc., the Hospital of Middlesex East, Community Care Consortium, Community Family, Malden Community Nursing Association, North Shore Health Planning Council, and the state association for Community Health Agencies. In addition, Clarice was active in the League of Women Voters, was a member of the Health Advisory Committee of Wakefield High School, active in the National League for Nursing, and a member of the Wakefield Board of Health. Clarice and her husband Joseph raised their family in Melrose, then moved to Wakefield where she lived for 20 years. She was an active member of the First Parish Congregational Church in Wakefield. She was very proud of her children, and is survived by Lynn Andrews McBeth and her husband Donald McBeth of Vero Beach, FL, Michael Joseph Andrews and his wife Ann Andrews of Buzzards Bay, Jean Andrews Bergquist and her husband Gary Bergquist of Ellington, CT, Nancy Andrews Skidmore and her husband Michael Skidmore of Quincy, Marcia Andrews Deubler and her husband Russell Deubler of Hudson, NH, and Scott Kenneth Andrews of Devens; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a brother Carroll L. Poole of Crystal River, FL and a sister-in-law Ellen Nickerson Poole of Manchester, NH, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death besides her husband and parents, by a brother Thomas Wayne Poole. The family extends their sincere thanks and gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the staff of Evergreen at Brooksby Village in Peabody, also Friendship House, and Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for her Memorial Service on Friday April 12, 2013 at 1 PM in Brooksby Chapel at Brooksby Village, near intersection of Rte 95 and Rte 114 Peabody. Interment will be at a later date in Greenville, ME.
