Obituary of Margaret E "Tootsie" Cowhig
Margaret E. “Tootsie” (Phillips) Cowhig, 76, of Salem died peacefully on Tuesday afternoon with her family by her side following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late David Cowhig.
Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late Harry “Spike” and Edna (Driscoll) Phillips. She was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Salem High School, class of 1954.
Tootsie was employed as a laundrist for over 30 years at the Mayflower Dry Cleaners in Marblehead, and also at Goldsmith Newspaper in Salem, inserting the circulars in each week’s newspaper. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW in Salem.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kathleen and Wayne St. Hilaire of Salem, Barbara and Robert Ensign of Amesbury and Paula Cowhig and William Hurley of Danvers, a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Patty Cowhig of SC, a brother, Peter Phillips of Salem, four grandchildren, Teresa and Matthew Lunt of Marblehead, Eric and Noel St. Hilaire of Danvers, Faith and Arin Jordan of Raymond, NH, and Breann Cowhig of Beaufort, SC., a great grandchild, Summer St. Hilaire of Danvers, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Patty Cowhig of Middleton, her dear friend Mary Tobin of Lynn. She was predeceased by her brother Henry Phillips and mother and father-in-law, Avernia and Francis Cowhig.
Following cremation, visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 3:00 until 6:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. There are no funeral services and burial planned at this time. Expressions of sympathy can be made in her name to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) P.O.
