Obituary of Emil Szmyd
Emil Szmyd, 83, of Peabody, died Saturday at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Theresa (Lewicki) Szmyd who died in 2006. According to family legend,, Emil’s mother, Victoria Szmyd, a native of Newmarket, NH, gave birth to him on the steps of the US Embassy in Poland on May 20, 1930. He later immigrated to the US in 1950 after being raised by his grandmother while Russian and German soldiers occupied his village of Lubla, Poland during WW II. After reuniting with his family in the US, Emil learned how to repair houses from his step-father and became an electrician. He joined the IBEWE Local 259 in Salem later retiring from Local 103 in 1992. He was also the vice- president and an active member of the Polish Falcons Nest 188 of Salem. He enjoyed playing cards, watching birds, playing harmonica and being with his grandchildren. He worked all over the North shore and will be sorely missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his children, Edward Szmyd, Richard and his wife Catherine Szmyd and Robert and his wife Tara Szmyd all of Peabody, his grandchildren, Nicholas, Maggiemae, Isabella and Rose Szmyd, his sisters, Irene, Marilyn and her husband Ron and his cousins, Walter, Oleshia, Joe, Tadeck, Statia and Teresa.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 until 12:00PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St. Peabody facility followed by Services there at 12 Noon. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
