Obituary of Mary (Hantzopoulos) Karakoudas

Mary (Hantzopoulos) Karakoudas, 92, of Peabody, died Wednesday evening at the Peabody Glen Nursing Home following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of the late Andrew Karakoudas. Born in Greece, she was the daughter of the late Epaminondas and Barbara Hantzopoulos. She immigrated to the United States when she was 7 years old and settled in Peabody. She was raised in Peabody, attended Peabody Public Schools and was a graduate of Peabody High School. She worked for over 40 years at the GTE Sylvania in Salem and was a member of the quarter century club, retiring many years ago. She was a member of the Philoptohos Athena Society, Daughters of Penelope, the Samians Club as well as a longtime member of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody. She also enjoyed for many functions at St. Vasilios Church and also enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Perry and Cheryl Karakoudas of Peabody, two daughters, Theodora Dolly Karakoudas of Watertown and Barbara Cookie Kostopoulos of Navarre, Fla. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late George and Thomas Karakoudas, sister of the late John, Peter, and Kostas Hantzopoulos, Olga Karavedas, Nicoletta Stoupakis, and Diane Bailor. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00 AM in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vasilios Altar Fund, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody, MA 01960.
