Obituary of John William "Oogie" May

John William “Oogie” May, 64, of Peabody, died early Thursday morning with his family by his side at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a year long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was the husband of the late Kathleen (O’Brien) May. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late William and Coula (Cokorogiannis) May. He was a lifelong resident of Peabody and a graduate of Peabody High School, class of 1967. After high school, John entered the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and served his country for four years before he was honorably discharged in June of 1972. Following his service with the United States Air Force, John was employed with the United States Post Office as a truck driver for over 28 years in North Reading before retiring in October 2009. John was a member of many social clubs in Peabody, the Elk’s Club, Italian American Club, the VFW American Legion, Salem Moose, and the DAV as well. He was very active with these clubs and played in many softball, basketball, golf, and dart leagues. He is survived by his fiancé Kelly McGovern of Peabody, his two sons, James May and Steven Sinapis, both of Branford, CT, his daughter, Christine (May) Millim of White Hills, AZ, a brother, Michael and his wife Marianne Kokinis of Dedham, his sister Francine Thornhill of Danville, NH, and is also survived by five grandchildren, Samuel, Kassandra, and Jackie Millim, and James and Olivia May, two great grandchildren, Addisson and Emrey Millim, several nieces and nephews, and his life long friends, Joe Fernandes, Perry Karakoudas, and John Kentros. To his friends and family Oogie was a true hall of famer in life. His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial will be in CedarGroveCemetery, Peabody.
