Harold E. Putnam, Sr.
PEABODY—Harold E. Putnam, Sr., 97, beloved husband of the late Ruth (Craven) Putnam, died peacefully on Wednesday November 27, 2013 at his home while in the comforting presence of his family.
Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Everett and Alice (Jung) Putnam. He was a lifelong resident of the city.
Mr. Putnam owned the Putnam Gas & Service on the corner of Lynn, Lynnfield & Washington Streets in Peabody at the site of the present Sunoco station. His family had a farm on the land between Lynn & Lynnfield streets and had a great influence on his growing up taking care of his sustenance.
“Putt” as he was called, was a large Crane Operator and was a civilian working at the Boston Naval Yard during World War II. He was employed with Wright Construction for many years and also with Conte & Donovan Contracting, besides his varied vocations with his family. He had an old Ford Model T as he helped deliver mail in the Peabody area in the 1920’s – 1930’s. He also plowed streets for the City of Peabody for many years, He was an accomplished mechanic who could use Yankee ingenuity to fix anything needed. He will be dearly missed by his family and those who knew him.
The Putnam family would like to thank All Care Hospice for their professionalism, care and dedication for Harold and the family during his recent illness.
He is survived by a son Harold E. Putnam, Jr. & his wife Betty Anne of Beverly; a daughter Sandra P. Martin of NH; five grandchildren Scott Hart, Tish Lentine, David Putnam, Ryan Toy, and Emily Teague; five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren as they had five generations living in the family; two brothers Roy Putnam and Ralph Putnam, both of NH; two sisters, Eileen Blackler-Hall of Marblehead and Joan Hazel of NH, as well as many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death besides his wife and parents, by a daughter Denice Teague, and sisters Hilda Churchill and Dorothy Durkee.
Following cremation, relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Wednesday December 4, 2013 from 10 – 11:30 AM in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:30 AM in the funeral home. Urn burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Memorial donations may be made to All Care Hospice, 210 Market St., Lynn, MA 01901.
