Obituary of Marie Lorraine Valaitis
Marie Lorraine (Maillet) Valaitis, 89, of Peabody, died Tuesday at Salem Hospital following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of the late Vity Valaitis.
Born in Ashburnham, she was the daughter of the late Donat and Agnes (Theriault) Maillet.
After high school, she attended nursing school at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester. After graduating from nursing school, she began a 30 year working career at the Chelsea Soldier Home before retiring as a supervisor in 1986.
In her retirement Marie was a very active volunteer at the Peter A.Torigian Community Life Center. She was a past president of the Peabody AARP Chapter 4806 and served as Chairperson on several of their Committee’s. She was most notably responsible for their Christmas parties and the publication of their monthly newsletter. She received the Chapter’s Certificate of Appreciation Award and was given Honorary Life Membership. She also served as Secretary of the Peabody Triad Committee and did various volunteer work for the Peabody Council on Aging.
She is survived by her son Roy and his wife Linda Valaitis of Salem, her daughter, Joyce and her husband Robert Wood of Wakefield and is also survived by five grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody followed by her Funeral Mass at 12:00 PM noon at Our Lady of Assumption Church, Grove St, Lynnfield to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Lake St., Peabody. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Friends of the Peabody Council on Aging, 79 Central St., Peabody, MA 01960.
