Obituary of Manuel E Bettencourt

Manuel E Bettencourt, 77, of Peabody, died unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon at Salem Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Maria (Viega) Bettencourt with whom he shared over 51 years of marriage. Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late John and Marie da Luz (Quadros) Bettencourt. He was raised and educated in Portugal and served in the Portuguese Army for six years in India. Upon marrying his wife Maria in 1962, he immigrated to the United States and has lived in Peabody for the past 52 years. He was employed in the leather industry as a cutter, trimmer, and pastier for AC Lawrence and Henry Leather in Peabody and finally, before retiring he worked in Seabrook, NH. Manuel enjoyed spending time in his backyard, tending to his garden and flowers. He was a member of the Holy Ghost Society in Peabody, enjoyed listening to the Portuguese Band, watching soccer and years ago, he enjoyed fishing. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his son, Edmund Bettencourt, his granddaughter Meaghan C. Bettencourt and her boyfriend Jesse Machado, his sister, Maria Nellie and her husband Gerald LaPointe, all of Peabody and is also survived by many cousins. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 8:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by his Funeral Mass at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Walsh Ave, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
