Obituary of Josephine (Souza) Couceiro

Josephine (Souza) Couceiro, 89, of Peabody, passed away early Tuesday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Manuel Couceiro, who passed away in 1973. Josephine was born in Peabody, MA on November 9, 1924, daughter of the late Sebastian and Ernestina (Almeida) Coutinho. As a child she moved to Portugal returning to the U.S. at the age of 19. For many years Mrs. Couceiro, along with her husband, owned Pioneer Tanning in Salem, then continued her working career at Bleyer Industries in Wakefield for 12 years until her retirement. Josephine was a member of the Portuguese Continental Union. Many of her interests included tending to her garden, which she took much pride in, going for long walks to keep herself active until very recently, and cooked a variety of meals for her family. She is survived by her grandchildren and their spouses Samantha McLaughlin, Christopher & Jessica Couceiro, Michelle Freeman, and James Carbone; her sister Rosa Jorge; her nieces and their spouses, Tina & Arthur Nicolaisen, Cidalia Marshall, Rosemary & Jose Romano, and Piedade & Tony Souza, 8 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her children Sebastian Couceiro, Lorraine Carbone, & Manuela, her brother-in-law, Joseph Jorge, and grandson-in-law, Hank McLaughlin. A Visitation will be held Friday, March 21, at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody from 9:00 AM - 10:30A.M, followed by a funeral mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1 Margin St., Peabody at 11 A.M.
