Obituary of Joseph Toomey

Joseph Toomey, 95, of Peabody, died Saturday evening at the Penacook Place Nursing Home in Haverhill following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Margaret (McLaughlin) Toomey with whom he shared over 73 years of marriage. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late William and Blanche (LaMonde) Toomey, he was raised and educated in Salem and has lived in Peabody for the past 75 years. Joseph first enlisted with the United States Army during WWII and later he enlisted with the United States Navy and served during the Korean War before he was honorably discharged in 1951. Following the War, Joseph was employed for over 30 years as a leather worker for Mason Tanning before retiring in 1983. He was a long time member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1011 in Peabody and he enjoyed bowling and was an avid Red Sox fan. Besides his loving wife he is survived by his two daughters, Anne Billert and her husband Ted Smolen of Georgetown and Tricia Shaw and her husband Jim Anderson of Beverly, his sister, Elizabeth Doskey of MN, his six grandchildren, Peter, Sean, and Brian Billert, Faith Cappotto, and Nicole and Matthew Shaw, his nine great grandchildren, Kyle, Kalin, Alexandra, PJ, Alyssa and Brooke Billert, Noah and Jeffrey Cappotto, and Dante Shaw, and is also survived by a great great granddaughter, Olivia Billert and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, William and Frank Toomey and Blanche Poor. His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Church, Church St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to www.WoundedWarriorProject.org
