Obituary of Most Rev. Kilian John Healy

Most Reverend Kilian John Healy, O.Carm., former Prior General of the Carmelite Order, died Sunday May 18, 2003 in Beverly Ma., after a long illness. Born in Worcester, Ma. on Nov. 15, 1912, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Abbie (Healy) Healy, he entered the Carmelite order at Mt. Carmel College in Niagara Falls, Ontario in 1929. He professed his first vows there in 1931 and then went of St. Albert’ s International College in Rome to study Theology. He was ordained to the priesthood in Rome, Italy in 1937 and later recieved a degree in Theology at the Gregorian Pontifical University in Rome in 1939. He came back to teach theology and philosophy at Mt. Carmel College and later taught at Whitefriars Hall major seminary in Washington, D.C. and also for a time at Marymount Junior College in Arlington, Va.. He received his Doctorate of Sacred Theology and in 1953 became assistant General for English - Speaking Carmelites and professor of theology at St. Albert’ s International College. He was elected Prior General of the Carmelites in 1959 serving twelve years in this capacity until 1971. He then served at St. Therese Chapel in Peabody, Ma. from 1972 until 1974. He then was a member of the formation staff at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before returing to Peabody where he served until shortly before his death. Fr. Healy was a member of the Theological Society of America and the Mariological Society of America. He was the brother of the late Lawrence and James Healy, Margaret Foley and Marion Pratt. He is survived by 2 nephews, Richard Foley of Westford, Ma. and Raymond Foley of Wilmington, Deleware and a brother-in-law, Raymond Foley of Worcester. The Most Rev. Joseph Chalmers, O,.Carm Prior General will be the principal celebrant at the Mass of Christian burial on Friday May 23, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at the Carmelite Monastery of Mt. Carmel 15 Mt. Carmel Rd. In Danvers. The Very Rev. John F. Russell, O.Carm S.T.D., Prior Provincial will be Concelebrating and Rev. John Malley,O.Carm, former Prior General will be the Homilist. Burial will be in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 6:00 and 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. at the Carmelite Priory at 4 Wheatland St., Peabody. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Carmelite Missions, c/o 4 Wheatland St., Peabody, Ma 01960 in his memory.
