Obituary of Carl T. Mattarocchia, Jr

Carl T. Mattarocchia, 87, of Peabody, died peacefully on Saturday September 7 with his family by his side. He was the husband of the late Stella (Spyropoulos) Mattarocchia, whom he cared for lovingly at home for two years after she was stricken by a debilitating stroke. Mr. Mattarocchia was born June 11, 1927 in Lynn, son of the late Carl and Josephine (Burke) Mattarocchia. He was raised in Lynn and graduated from Lynn English High School in 1945. He served in World War II and with the Navy Seabees in Japan. He received his bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University and later earned his master’s degree in education from Salem State College. Mr. Mattarocchia ran a gas station in Salem before becoming a teacher in Malden. He joined the Peabody school system in 1966, teaching math, working as a guidance counselor, and finally serving as the city’s Director of Continuing Education until his retirement in 1992. He enjoyed vacationing with his wife Stella, and they traveled to many different places. They especially enjoyed annual extended stays in Aruba for many years. Mr. Mattarocchia was a parishioner at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody and was past president of the board of directors there. He was also a past master of the Amity Lodge in Danvers and a member of the Aleppo Shrine in Wilmington. Mr. Mattarocchia is survived by many close family members and friends. His Funeral will be held on Saturday at 12:15 PM at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 AM until 11:45 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Boston St., Lynn.
