Obituary of George N. Houghton
George N. Scrappy Houghton, of Lynn, 79 years, husband of Mary L. (Broughton) Houghton died Monday at the Kindred Hospital Boston North Shore after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Houghton was born Jan. 12, 1923 in Peabody son of the late George N. and Marie A. (Kellett) Houghton. He was raised and educated in Peabody. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, during his senior year at Peabody High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Marine Division as a Pharmacist’ s Mate, 2rd Class. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy he received his high school diploma. While in high school he was a member of the football team which played at the 1941 State Championship.
Mr. Houghton moved to Lynn 53 years ago and has made his home there since. He was employed as a construction foreman for the New England Telephone Company from 1946 until his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Bell Telephone Retiree Association, First Marine Division Association, V.F.W. Post #507 and the American Legion Post #462 also the Bass Point Boat Club all in Nahant.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas F. and Johan Houghton of Limington, ME, George C. and Debra Houghton of Newton, NH and Paul R. Houghton of Lynn; a daughter and her husband, Mary E. and David Aylward of Thornton, NH; a sister, Marie A. Mear of AZ; eight grandchildren, Andrew Houghton of ME, James Houghton of Swampscott, Nicholas and Christopher Houghton, Justine and Mary Houghton and Terry and Steven Aylward all of NH and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the Conway facility at 12 Chestnut St., Peabody 978-531-0398 of the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Thursday 4 to 8 p.m. Burial in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead.
