Obituary of Maria Bernadete "Bernie" de Andrade
Maria Bernadete "Bernie" de Andrade, 82, of Lynn, wife of Jose Andrade, died peacefully and in the company of many loving family members on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers.
Bernie was born on Madeira Island, Portugal, on August 20, 1932. She was one of eight children born to the late Antonio and Clarisse (de Abreu) Fernandes. She was raised and educated in Portugal and immigrated to the United States in 1954 where she married Manuel Brazao. She and her husband were the proprietors of the well known Pilgrim House and Madeira Club in Provincetown for twenty years (1956-1976).
Subsequent to Mr. Brazao's death in 1974, she returned to Madeira Island to care for her aging parents. While there, she was reacquainted with her childhood sweetheart, Jose "Joe" Andrade and they were married in 1981.
Bernie dedicated her life to hosting family and friends, in both Massachusetts and Madeira.
She traveled extensively and particularly enjoyed going on cruises. She also loved playing cards with her family and tending to her flower gardens. Following an illnesses, Bernie, along with her husband Joe relocated to Massachusetts in 2005.
Bernie is survived by her husband Joe, brother Alvaro Fernandes of Madeira (deceased wife Caroline and present wife Conceicao); Encarnacao “Connie” Pereira of Peabody (deceased husband Norberto); Ana Stanford of Richardson, TX (husband Thomas) and Amanda “Lita” Georges of Lynn (husband John), many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Bernie was predeceased by her brothers Antonio, Humberto Fernandes of Arlington (deceased wife Joan) and Leonardo Fernandes of Danvers (wife Margarida).
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Ann Church, 140 Lynn St., Peabody and burial at
Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
Her family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, December 12, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
