Obituary of Elizabeth Barr
Elizabeth Betty (English) Barr, 85, of Peabody, beloved wife of 54 years to the late Bruce D. Barr, died surrounded by her family on Sunday evening, January 22nd, as result of injuries sustained late Wednesday. She will be dearly missed by all.
Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Hazel (Hanson) English. She was raised and educated in Salem and graduated form Salem High School in 1936. She continued her education at Salem Commercial School.
During World War II Mrs. Barr worked at the General Electric Plant in Lynn, and later as a telephone operator in Danvers. She has been a Peabody resident for the past 56 years and at the time of her retirement in 1978, she had partnered her husbands business, Bruce Barr Fuel Oil Company of West Peabody.
In her youth, she enjoyed walking to Salem Willows with her sisters and developed a love for swimming. She later enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cruel work, reading and doing puzzles. She was a member of the Danvers YMCA where she continued swimming, and also was a member of the Eastern Star in Danvers.
Betty is survived by her loving daughter, Ruth and Steven Weick of Peabody, a brother and sister-in-law, William and Gail English of Elliot, Maine, a sister, Ruth Tremblay of Peabody, two grandchildren, Timothy Martin and Bruce Weick, both of Peabody and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Eleanor Walden and Doris English.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM in St. Peter’ s Episcopal Church, St. Peter’ s Street, Salem, to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Peabody, Facility. Burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 119, 9 Chapel Road, Danvers, MA, 01923.
