Obituary of Arthur J. "Bub" Whalen

Arthur J. Bub Whalen PEABODY Arthur J. Bub Whalen, 88, beloved husband of the late Claire J. (Brawley) Whalen, died on Tuesday morning at his home following a courageous short term battle with cancer. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Jeremiah and Sara (O’ Brien) Whalen. He lived in Salem in his youth, attended Salem schools and graduated from Salem High School, Class of 1934. He lived in Peabody for the last 56 years. Mr. Whalen was a veteran of World War II, with service in the United States Army. He received a Purple Heart while in Salerno Landing in Italy. He continued serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater Camaigns. He was a Master Mechanic for the U.S. Post Office in Lynn for 35 years until retiring in 1983. He then worked part-time as a Security Guard at the New England Power Plant in Salem for 16 years and completely retired four years ago. Mr. Whalen was a longtime communicant at St. John the Baptist Church in Peabody, was a former member of the Holy Name Society, was one who maintained his health and fitness working out at the Salem YMCA for over 35 years, and at Bally’ s in Peabody for the last nine years, up to November 2005. He was an avid sports fan, especially football, liked travel, cruise lines, and especially being with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by: three daughters and sons-in-law, Rosemary P. Boudreau of Lynn, Shelley & Joseph Doyle of Peabody, and Mary & James Mahoney of Salem; seven grandchildren, Paul Boudreau and Brian Boudreau of Lynn, Sgt. Patrick Boudreau U.S. Army of Afghanistan, Joseph Doyle of Boston’ s North End, Katelyn & Chris Angland, and Maura Doyle of Peaobdy, and Tara Doyle of Kailua, HI; two brothers-in-law, Edward & Joan Brawley and Al Frisch of Salem, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Francis, Thomas and Leo Whalen, and sister Margaret Hardy. His funeral will be held on Friday at 10 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 AM in St. John’ s Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M. Burial will be in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem.
