Obituary of John J. Bettencourt
John J. Bettencourt, 78, of Peabody, died early Tuesday morning at Salem Hospital following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Virginia M. (Navarra) Bettencourt with whom he shared over 54 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Peabody, he was the son of the late John C. and Mary (Bettencourt) Bettencourt. He was a lifelong resident of Peabody and attended Peabody Schools.
Prior to his retirement 20 years ago, he had worked for the city of Peabody, both at City Hall and for the Water Department. He also worked for many years in the Leather industry.
He was an avid sports fan and also enjoyed reading.
Besides his loving wife of 54 years, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John and Lauri Bettencourt of North Andover; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Jerry Mohan of Andover; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Margaret Bettencourt of Beverly and Manuel and Alzira Bettencourt of Peabody; a sister, Margaret Bettencourt of Beverly; 3 grandchildren, Samantha Bettencourt of North Andover and Tara and Jerry Mohan of Andover and several nieces, nephews and cousins
His funeral service will be held on Friday at 8:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody at 9:00 AM to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Thursday from 4-8 PM. Burial in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem.
