Obituary of Lucy J. (Carr) Silva

Lucy J. Silva, age 92, died after a lengthy illness on February 6 at the Rosewood Nursing Home with her loving family at her side. She was the loving wife of Anthony M. Silva with whom she celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary last year. Lucy spent most of her childhood and adult life living in Salem with her family. Lucy is survived by her husband (Tony) and four sons: Bob and his wife Peggy, Tom and his wife Catherine all of whom reside in Nahant, Tony and his wife Kathie who live in Epping NH, and Jack who lives in Newburyport. Lucy also leaves eight grandchildren: Julie and Jason, Kellie, Rebecca and Matthew, Patricia, Tony and Joe. Lucy spent most of her childhood and adult life living in Salem with her family. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, and great grandchildren all of whom she loved very much. Many of her fondest memories were spent in the company of these young children. Lucy, a graduate of Salem High School, was a life long communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Salem. She was employed as a waitress at a number of different establishments in the Salem area including many years working at the Tedesco Country Club. She also worked with her husband at his place of business: John T. Berry’s Jewelry Store in Peabody Square. Lucy was a loving, dedicated and supportive mother. As a parent, she assured that her children had many and varying recreational, athletic, and educational opportunities throughout their lives. Lucy took pleasure in participating and attending many of these events throughout her life. Lucy enjoyed traveling. This included many trips within the U.S. She very much enjoyed taking more than a dozen trips to Ireland with her husband Tony. They especially enjoyed vacationing on the south west coast of Ireland and made lifelong friends there. Lucy proudly volunteered her services for over 20 years participating in fund raising activities at Bishop Fenwick High School in Peabody. Lucy was a sports fan. In her children’s early years she looked forward to seeing their games and would be heard cheering for their teams from the sidelines. She was also a fan of Boston professional teams including the Patriots and Red Sox. Lucy was an avid reader. She especially enjoyed reading popular mysteries and fiction. Some of her favorite authors included Grisham, Balducci, and Cromwell. Lucy had an incredible memory for characters and plots of the books she read long ago and could surprise other people by discussing them. She was predeceased by her parents Myrtle and James Carr as well as eight brothers and sisters many of whom lived in the Salem area throughout their adult lives. Lucy was a very loving wife, sister, mother, aunt, and friend to all the people close to her. The family would like to thank all the staff and friends at the Rosewood Nursing Home who provided Lucy with such wonderful care during her stay there. Her family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, February 12, 2015 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. Her funeral will be held Friday, February 13, 2015 at 8:45 a.m. from the funeral home followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church, Salem. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory with a donation to the Rosewood Residents Council, 22 Johnson Street, Peabody, MA 01960. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
