Obituary of Acacio Joseph Gazo
Acacio Joseph Gazo, 83, formerly of Peabody and Salem, died at the Putnam Farm Assisted Living Center in Danvers where he had just recently moved. He was the devoted husband of Gloria (Coscia) Gazo with whom he shared over 36 years of marriage.
Joe was born and raised in South Boston. He was the son of the late Acacio L. Gazo and Dora Gazo. He attended Brandeis Vocational School and served with the U. S. Air Force and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1951.
Joe was employed for 21 years as a firefighter in the City of Boston. Joe achieved the ranks of Captain and retired as District Fire Chief in 1981. Joe also attended Salem State College and received a degree in Social Work. He always enjoyed sports, first playing on various football and baseball teams in South Boston as a youth and later with the U. S. Air Force football team.
Later in life he enjoyed golfing and fishing spending ten happy years in the Florida sunshine with Gloria living in various communities including Jacksonville. Joe is survived by a lifelong close childhood friend, William Radzik and many close friends in the North Shore area. He and Gloria were frequent visitors of the Peabody Senior Center and made many friends there. Joe was loved by the many nurses and health professionals who cared for him and found him to be a wonderful person with a great spirit and a courageous attitude especially after the difficult times after the loss of his wife whom he referred to as his" angel".
His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Church, Church Street, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM. Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Friday February 13, 2015 at 12:45 PM
