Obituary of Bessie V. (Carney) Riordan

Bessie V. (Carney) Riordan, 98, formerly of So. Peabody, died Friday at the Peabody Glenn Nursing Center after a short illness. She was the wife of the late James H. Riordan. She was born in Peabody on May 14, 1906, the daughter of the late Daniel F. and Bridget J. (Durkin) Carney and had resided in Peabody most of her life before moving to the Brickhouse Haven in Salem nine years ago. She was a graduate of Peabody High School class of 1923 and was first employed as a bookkeeper and stenographer at the Goodnow Shoe Company. Later she was a salesperson along with her husband for the Granada Wines Winery for many years prior to her retirement. During the thirties, she operated the Patty - Ann Beauty Salon on Endicott in Peabody . She had been an active parishioner at St. Ann’ s Church in Peabody and belonged to the Ladies Sodality . She was also a member of the Luncheon Bridge Club and the Peabody Senior Citizens. She loved taking care of and watching her family grow. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann and John Brophy Sr. of So. Peabody, 4 grandchildren, Linda Brophy of Breckinridge, Co., John Brophy Jr. of Peabody, Colleen Stone of Centerville, MA and Paula Pike of Hamilton; 6 great grandchildren, Lauren and John Pike of Hamilton, John M. Brophy 111 of Peabody and Charlotte , Catherine and Caroline Stone all of Centerville, MA and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Richard Riordan and Geraldine Riordan and the sister of the late John Jack , Henry, Daniel and Anna F. Carney and Mary Bond. Her Funeral will be held on Thursday at 8:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 12 Chestnut St., Peabody facility followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Ann’ s Church, Peabody at 9:00 am. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. Visiting hours on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
