Obituary of John H Costello
John H Costello, 66, died on Thursday February 19 at Salem Hospital after a chronic illness. He was the son of the late John H and Mary F (Scott) Costello and was predeceased by his brother William and an infant sister.
John was a graduate of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, UMass Boston and did his graduate study in archaeology at Penn State. He had worked on the archaeology dig at Spectacle Island as part of the Big Dig Project and had found memories of that time.
A long time science fiction fan, John was a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America and had translated some of the works of Kir Bulychev from Russian into English. He had attended many local conventions and spoke at some of them as well.
John was a former employee of Toys R Us in Peabody and the Ann & Hope Garden Shop in Danvers.
He is survived by his cousin Linda Surette and her family of Lynn, a cousin, Dan Costello of East Boston, a sister-in-law, Barbara Nash of OH, and by many other relatives and friends including his longtime friend Jean Berman who helped care for him.
The family would like to thank the Peabody Dialysis Center, Salem Hospital, North Shore Elder Services, and the other visiting nurse and home care agencies who helped John to remain at home for as long as he did.
Per John’s wishes there will be no funeral or memorial services following his cremation. Anyone wishing to make a donation in his memory may do so to a charity of one’s choice.
