Obituary of Virginia (Sousa) George

Virginia A. (Sousa) George SALEM/PEABODY – Virginia A. (Sousa) George, 94, beloved wife of the late Stephen A. George, died peacefully in her sleep at the Ledgewood Rehab & Skilled Nursing Center in Beverly following a long illness. Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Catherine (Mello) Sousa. She grew up in Salem where she attended schools, and lived there most of her life. She lived in Peabody for several years. Mrs. George was a true partner with her husband Steve. Together they owned and operated Dottie & Ray’s Restaurant in Salem for 35 years while living above the business. They also operated Steve’s Taxi in Salem. Prior to that she worked at Landolphi’s in Danvers and Parsons Restaurant. Virginia was a member of the Golden Agers and Senior Citizens Bowling League at Metro Bowl in Peabody. While living at Tannery II she lead residents in exercise. She was a very giving person who always found ways to take care of people. She would feed people struggling financially at her restaurant for free; also she made chicken soup for people who were sick and bring food to the homeless. She will be remembered as a generous person. She is survived by a daughter Donna Carroll of Exeter, NH; two grandchildren, Stephen Wheelock of Danville, NH and Melissa Cote of Plaistow, NH; one brother James Sousa of Peabody; two sisters Mary Potter of Peabody and Florence LeClerc of Salem, and many nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of the late Anthony Wheelock, sister of the late Joseph, George, Frank and Manuel Sousa, Delvina Twardowski, and Cecilia Lamy. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Wednesday at 10 AM in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5 – 8 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
