Obituary of Clarence J. "Joe" Murphy, Jr.

Clarence J. Murphy, Jr., 80 years, of Topsfield husband of the late Frances (Petkevitch) Murphy, died Friday morning at the Masconomet Healthcare Center in Topsfield after a brief illness. Mr. Murphy was born August 31, 1922 in Peabody son of the late Clarence and Helen (McCarthy) Murphy. He was raised in Peabody graduated from Peabody High School class of 1940. After his marriage he lived in Lynn before moving to Topsfield in 1959. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Sergeant with the 3701st AAF BU Amarillo Texas Co. and saw battle in the Rhineland, Normandy, Southern France, Central Europe, Northern France and the Ardennes. After the war he attended Northeastern University and received his degree in Chemical Engineering. Mr. Murphy began his 40 year working career as laborer at the C.L. Hauthaway & Sons Corporation in Lynn. Working his way thru the ranks he became a salesman then vice president and was allowed to become a partner in the company. He retired in 1989 after serving as President for many years. He loved sports and traveling. He is survived by a son, Michael P. Murphy of Topsfield; a brother, William Murphy of Lynn; 3 grandchildren, Erica L. Murphy of Peabody, Dale M. Murphy of Salem and Renae E. Murphy of Topsfield; a very close friend, Josephine Comeau of Saugus and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Eileen Webber and James Murphy. His funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody location followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Sunday 5 to 8 p.m. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Lynn. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Shore Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Dr., Peabody MA 01960.
