Obituary of Robert M. Cucurull

Robert M. “Pops” Cucurull, 95, of Peabody, beloved husband of the late Grace J. (Paz) Cucurull, died with his family by his side at Lahey Clinic in Peabody on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 after being stricken at his home. Pops was born in Cambridge, on January 17, 1920 the son of Juan and Harriett (Robertson) Cucurull. He was raised and educated in Lynn and in 1942 enlisted into the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Harris, USS Schroeder and USS Little Rock and as a highly decorated veteran he was awarded 6 Asiatic-Pacific Star Medals, the Philippine Liberation and American Defense and European African-Middle-Eastern Star Medals, and 11 Battle Stars while serving in World War II and the Korean War. In 1951, Pops was recalled into the Navy and served as a Machinist Mate First Class, Korean War, and was Honorably Discharged in 1952. He then pursued his education at Northeastern University receiving an Associates Degree in Engineering. Before moving to Peabody 30 years ago, he resided in Lynn and Nahant. During his working career at G.E. in Lynn, Pops was employed as a turbine engineer and was one of the engineers to install a nuclear powered steam turbine in the USS George Washington SSBN 598, and in the 1st nuclear powered Poseidon Missile Submarine. Pops was a loving father who devoted his life creating a home for his family and as a hobby enjoyed fishing. He was a member of the VFW Post 507 in Lynn, Kiwanis and a former member of the State Wide MA Towing Association. Pops is survived by his loving son, Robert H. Cucurull and his longtime companion Elaine M. Dole with whom he lived in Peabody; his grandchildren, Robert J. Cucurull and his wife Rita of CA, Adam Cucurull and his fiancée Kelli Sandler of Reading, Tara Cucurull of Peabody, Kylie Cucurull of FL, and Roderick Cucurull of CA; 5 great grandchildren, Ruby, Noah and Ava Cucurull, Madison Drillis and Arianna Parelli; many nieces, nephews, a longtime friend and confidant, Rebekah Bedard, and his beloved German Sheppard Rodina. He was also predeceased by his son Roderick Allen Cucurull. “Pops will be missed by many friends at local eateries” A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody.
