Obituary of William S. McCarthy
William S. McCarthy, 83, of Peabody and formerly of Medford, died Thursday afternoon at his home following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Barbara Ann (Mahoney) McCarthy with whom he shared over 53 years of marriage.
Born in Medford, he was the son of the late Stephen and Ethel (Lenox) McCarthy. He was raised and educated in Medford, and was a graduated of Medford High School. After high school, he attended Boston College for three and a half years.
He was a veteran who served stateside for the United States Army during World War II.
For 26 years he worked as a restaurant manager at Carroll’ s Restaurant in Medford. After his retirement, he worked an additional six years as a driver for the Boston Coach Company.
Mr. McCarthy enjoyed boating, fishing, and watching all of Boston’ s professional sports team. While he was at Boston College, he played three years of football.
Besides his loving wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James McCarthy and his wife Ruth Larkin of North Hampton, NH, and Steven and Robin McCarthy of Peabody, three daughters and sons-in-law, Daryl and Dr. Thomas Montenero of North Reading, Christine and John Weir of Peabody and Lisa McCarthy and Stephen Garland of Peabody. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jim and John Weir, Tommy and Diana Montenero, Billy Gaffney, Steven Jr., and Ryan McCarthy and Madison McCarthy. He was the father of the late Billy McCarthy, grandfather of the late Matthew Weir and brother of the late Ruth McCarthy.
His funeral service will be held on Monday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Adelaide’ s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Sunday from 3:00 until 7:00 PM. Burial in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Donations can be made in his name to the Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, Ma 01923.
