Obituary of Maria C. (Lopes) Figueiredo

Maria Candida (Lopes) Figueiredo, 86, passed away Thursday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, following a brief illness. She was the loving wife of Fernando Figueiredo of 63 years. Maria was born in Vila Franca, Portugal on November 1, 1928, daughter of the late Aires and Maria dos Prazeres (Almeida) Lopes. She was raised an educated in Portugal before moving to the United States. For many years Maria worked as a seamstress for New England Sportswear in Peabody, prior to retirement. She enjoyed cooking a variety of foods for her family, tending to her vegetable garden, and watching Mass every Sunday morning on the Portuguese television network. Besides her loving husband, she is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Ann and John Tomaz of Peabody, Maria and Avelino Sousa of Peabody; her grandchildren, John Tomaz and Gene Sousa; and a sister, Jovina Diniz of Portugal. She was the grandmother of the late Christine (Sousa) Fidalgo A Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 31, at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody from 2- 5 P.M. Her funeral will be held on Monday, June 1 at 7:45 A.M. at the funeral home, followed by a funeral mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church, in Peabody, at 9A.M. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem
