Obituary of Hubert F. McVann
Hubert F. Buddy McVann, 81, of Peabody, died early Wednesday morning at his home following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Philo (Kelly) McVann.
Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Hugh J. and Margaret (McLaughlin) McVann. He was a lifelong resident of Peabody and attended Peabody Public Schools. He later received his Bachelor’ s Degree in Education and a Master’ s Degree in Business from Northeastern University in Boston, and later received his 2nd Masters degree in Education from Salem State College.
He was a well known educator in the city of Peabody, who started his career as a teacher at the Wallis School, then became the first principal at both the West Memorial School, and the John F. Kennedy Junior High School, before retiring as principal at the Higgins Junior High School in the mid 1980’ s.
He was a veteran of World War II, who served with the United States Army Air Force. He was a recipient of the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters; Good conduct Medal, and distinguished Unit Badge with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster. He also received the Asiatic Pacific Service Ribbon.
He is survived by two daughters, Philo Wahtera of Swampscott, and Margaret Murphy of Peabody; a brother and sister-in-law, James B. and Josephine McVann of Lynn; a sister, Marguerite Byron of Peabody; a sister-in-law, Marguerite McVann of Peabody; 3 grandchildren, Megan Wahtera, Lauren Wahtera, and David Murphy, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was the brother of the late John McVann and Gertrude Doherty.
His funeral service will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody facility, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody at 11:00 AM to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visitation on Sunday from 4 until 8 PM.
