Obituary of Mickey Gness

Michael Mickey Gness, 85, of Peabody, died early Saturday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Estelle (Vezeau) Gness with whom he shared over 57 years of marriage. Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Andrew and Rose Gness. He was a lifelong resident of Peabody and was a graduate of Peabody High School. He was a veteran of World War II, who served with the United States Army. He fought in the Rhineland and was the recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war he worked for a few years for AC Lawrence Leather Company as shipper, and later worked for the city of Peabody, retiring as a custodian at the Higgins Middle School many years ago. Mickey also summered in Wells Beach Maine and was known as the Mayor of Wells Beach Atlantic Ave. He was a lifetime member and staunch supporter of the Elks B.P.O.E., 509 in Peabody, a member of the Disabled American Veterans group, and was a passionate New England Sports Fan who enjoyed watching and supporting local professional and collegiate teams. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Sharon Gness of Westport, Ct., a brother, Steve Gness of Salem, three sisters, Mary Dockham of Beverly, Ann Page of North Miami, Fla., and Helen Simard of Malden. and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John, Oscar, and Peter Gness. His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM in St. John’ s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friend are invited to attend. Visitation on Tuesday from 3:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 12 Chestnut St., Peabody Facility. Burial in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
