Obituary of Nancy J. (Whalen) Smith

Nancy J. (Whalen) Smith, 64, beloved wife of William “Bill” Smith, died peacefully while in the comforting presence of her family on Saturday evening August 29, 2015 at the Beverly Hospital, , after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Beatrice (Nekolopoulos) Whalen. She grew up in Peabody, graduated from Peabody High School, Class of 1969, and was a lifelong resident of the city. She had worked in Customer Service in several professional office settings, employed with E.G. & G, Equity Office Property Management in Boston, and recently with Fresenius Medical Company of Waltham. Nancy enjoyed a quiet life at home. Her passion was her dedication to family and friends. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, and will be dearly missed. She is survived by her husband Bill Smith of Peabody, with whom she shared 29 years of marriage; four step-children, Stephen Smith & his fiancée Lea of Manchester, NH, Philip Smith of Wakefield, Nancy Smith & Dennis Manning of Weymouth, and Suzanne & Stephen MacDonald of Billerica; 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Zawatsky of Billerica and Janis Smith of Somerville; a son-in-law Tim McLaughlin of South Boston, and a dear close family friend Chuck Trafton of Peabody. She was preceded in death, besides her parents, by a step-daughter Lisa McLaughlin and a sister Barbara Whalen. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Thursday September 3, 2015 at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in St. Ann’s Church, Peabody. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 – 8 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
