Obituary of Robert P. Beston

Robert P. Beston, 86, of Peabody died peacefully on August 31, 2015 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House Danvers . He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth “Betsy” (Brown) Beston, his three children, Mary Beth Brown and her husband Garth of Ipswich, Ellen Harris and her husband Michael of Greenwich, CT, and William Beston and his wife Cara of Pleasanton, CA. He also leaves his cherished grandchildren whom he loved deeply: Christopher and Peter Harris, Samantha and Joshua Brown, Zachary Elijah, and Noah Beston. He was the brother of Margaret E. Beston of East Greenwich, R.I. and was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Ellen (McCarthy) Beston, and his siblings, Rev. William J. Beston C.S.C., Eugene Beston, Mary Cragan and Ann Beston (Sr. Marie Bernadette, C.S.J.) Bob was raised in Somerville. He was an avid athlete most of his life and was an outstanding baseball player in high school as a young adult. He was proud to have been the pitcher of the 1947 Catholic League Champions from St. Clements High School in Somerville. He was a 1952 graduate of the University Of Notre Dame, a place he loved dearly all his life. His years there instilled in him a lifelong devotion to Our Blessed Mother. A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the US Army as a corporal in the Signal Corps Company in Verdun, France. Upon his return, he earned an MBA degree from Boston College in 1961. He was an active member in the early years of St. Adelaide’s Parish in West Peabody, serving as a CCD teacher, lector and Parish Council member. Bob retired in 1990 from the New England Telephone and Telegraph Co./Nynex after 33 years of service. He enjoyed many years of post-retirement travel and also playing golf as a member of the Ould Newbury Golf Club. He will be dearly missed by his wife, his children and grandchildren, and all who came to know him. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM, at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 4 in St. Adelaide’s Church, 708 Lowell St., West Peabody at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty St., Danvers, MA 01923 in his memory.
