Obituary of Carmelo Charlie Formica
Carmelo “Charlie” Formica PEABODY – Carmelo “Charlie” Formica, 91, beloved husband of the late Anna (Caferelli) Formica, died peacefully on Sunday September 20, 2015 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, following an extended illness. Born in Sicily, Italy, he was the son of the late Pasquale and Rosa (Puleo) Formica. He came to the United States at the age of three, and grew up in Medford. He graduated from Medford High School, then attended Alfred University. He lived in Peabody for nearly 60 years. As part of our Greatest Generation, Mr. Formica served in the United States Army during World War II. An entrepreneur, he owned his business Formica Metal Products in Medford, where they fabricated many scientific benches, metal furnishings, and several government contracts. He sold the business in the late 1980’s, and in his retirement worked part time with Hillside Chevrolet, the Peabody Auto Auction, and Home Depot. Charlie enjoyed travel with his wife, and visited all continental states driving by car, and enjoyed visiting all 50 states. He was active with the Salem Lancers Square Dancing, and volunteered with the Boy Scouts in Peabody. He is survived by a daughter and two sons and their spouses, Pasquale “Pat” & Cindy Formica of Marietta, GA, Steve & Kim Formica of Denver, CO, and Sandra Formica of Peabody; three grandchildren, Lauren Formica of GA, Samantha Formica and Luca Formica both of Denver, CO, and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Mamie Schiavone and Mary Ianno. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Saturday at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Lynnfield. A visitation will be held on Friday from 5 – 8 P.M. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
