Obituary of John J McCarthy

John J McCarthy, 82, lifelong resident of Peabody, passed away at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief illness on Friday, October 16, 2015. John was the husband of Virginia (Boggoch) McCarthy, with whom he recently celebrated 57 years of marriage. He was born in Peabody to the late Timothy and Alice (Healey) McCarthy. He is survived by his children, Kathleen and John Goguen of Rowley, Maureen and Thomas Leonard of West Newbury, Brian McCarthy, Colleen McCarthy and Brian Sullivan, Stephen and Allison McCarthy all of Peabody. John was the proud Papa of Sandra and Edward Leonard, Erik, Matthew, and Andrew McCarthy, Jacqueline Lendall, Nichole, Melissa and Michael McCarthy, Caitlyn and Caleigh McCarthy and Cassandra and Cameron Loizides. He was the greatgrand Papa to Braylon Leonard and Isaac Rivera. John graduated from Peabody High, class of 1950; he enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served throughout Europe during his tour. John was employed by the Peabody Post Office as a carrier retiring after 30 years. He was an active member of Peabody Council on Aging and the Peabody Golden Agers. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandchildren in their many activities. As a lifelong Boston sports fan he also enjoyed following Notre Dame. Some of his favorite pastimes were gardening, decorating the Christmas tree and reminiscing with his neighbors from the front porch of 4 Wheeler St. John was predeceased by his son John J. McCarthy Jr., and his daughter-in-law Janice St. Pierre McCarthy, brothers Timothy and David McCarthy and sisters Alice Linehan and Ann Wilcox. He will be fondly missed by all. His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty St., Danvers, MA 01923.
