Obituary of John J "Jack" Shay

John J “Jack” Shay, 96 of Southern Pines, NC, formerly of Boca Raton, FL and Peabody, died on Thursday November 5, 2015 in North Carolina. Born in Somerville on October 29, 1919, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Fitzpatrick) Shay. He was the husband of the late Eleanor Daggett Shay who predeceased him in 1991 and brother of the late Barbara Costigan. Jack was a World War II Army Airforce 1st Lieutenant (fighter pilot) serving in Italy. He attended Bentley School of Accounting and Finance. Jack was employed by the Boston Record American Hearst Corporation accounting department and later as night foreman of the engraving department and retired after 20 years. He then opened Budget Pools, Inc. of Peabody. He and Eleanor retired to Boca Raton, FL where they belonged to the Boca Raton Resort and Club and The Country Club of Boca Raton. He was a member of the Leo Council of the Knights of Columbus, Peabody and a past member of the Airforce Reserve. Survivors include a son, John Shay and his life partner, Wendy Doran of Boston, daughters, Judeth Hohmann and husband, Christopher of West Warwick, RI, Mary Alice Shay and husband, John Milichich of San Diego, CA and Maureen Wurzel and husband, Joseph of Southern Pines, NC. He will be dearly missed by his seven grandchildren, Amy and Michael Throckmorton, Kristen and Jamie Hohmann, John Shay III and Gregory Shay and Patrick Wurzel and four great grandchildren. His Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 AM at St. John’s Church Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church Street, Peabody. Burial will be in Highland Street Cemetery, Hampton, NH.
