Obituary of Oscar Francis Beumel Jr.
Oscar Francis Beumel Jr. 85, of Brooksby Village, Peabody, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2016 due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Evansville, Indiana on May 14, 1930, the son of the late Oscar F. and Caecelia (Froehle) Beumel and was raised and graduated as valedictorian of his class at Reitz Mem. High School in 1948. He then Entered Notre Dame on a Navy ROTC scholarship and was on the championship 1949 National Rifle team.
Following his graduation at Notre Dame in 1952, he served for three years in the US Navy during the Korean War. While stationed in Boston, he met his wife, Joan Natalie Kelley and they were married on June 30, 1956. Following his discharge from the Navy, he enrolled in the University of New Hampshire and obtained his Ph.D. in chemistry. He started his career at Foote Mineral Co in Exton, PA until 1971. One of his proudest accomplishments was his work to support NASA’s program to land men on the moon.
He later worked at the Owens Corning Fiberglas technical center in Ohio and had published many papers and scientific journals and was awarded several U.S. patents.
After his retirement he and his wife Joan moved to Brooksby Village in Peabody and spent summers at Long Beach, Rockport, MA. He had been a devout catholic and served as a lector in the parishes they belonged to. He was also an avid golfer and had one career hole-in-one.
He is survived by his wife Joan Beumel of Peabody, his three sons, Gregory Beumel of Washington, DC, Christopher Beumel of No. Charleston, SC and Jeffrey Beumel of Toboso, Ohio, a sister, Ann Dalton of Perrysburg, Ohio, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Martha Jean Bendzen and Harole Beumel.
A Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the Brooksby Village Chapel, 101 Brooksby Village Drive followed by a Funeral Mass there at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston, MA. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Notre Dame alumnae Association, 1100 Grace Hall, Notre Dame, In 46556 in his memory.
