Obituary of Edward J Young

Edward J “Papa” Young, 85, passed away on Sunday January 10, 2016. He was the devoted husband of the late Claire (Lansol) whom he shared more than 60 years of marriage. Born in Peabody on August 16, 1930, he was the son of the late Edward and Marion (Gillis) Young. He was a graduate of Peabody High school, class of 1948. He served his country in the Korean War. Upon his return he studied engineering at Wentworth College. Edward had a long and successful career and was employed by The United Shoe and General Electric. He ended his career at the Millipore Corporation after 16 years in 1995. Edward enjoyed golfing, gardening and repainting garden gnomes. He was an accomplished “handy man” and his family relied on him for advice and guidance on any home improvement projects. Edward was known as Papa to his beloved 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He loved taking them on outings to the Salem Willows to play skeeball and play Miniature golf and teaching the proper technique of how to putt. “Where to eat?” Papa’s only suggestion was the 99 Restaurant. His children will greatly miss his humor, calm advice, unmistakable laugh and patience. Edward is survived by his three children, Richard J Young of Derry, NH, Cynthia Mezoff and her husband Robert of Salem, and Christine O’Leary and her husband John of Bradford, his brother David and his wife Betty Young of CT, his six grandchildren, Jessica King, Rebecca Mezoff, Zachary Young, Sean O’Leary, Nicholas Young, and Braeden O’Leary, and his four great grandchildren, Cooper, Damien, Abigail and Amelia. Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his two sisters Madeline Hall and Patricia Wilson. Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM at the funeral home and burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Grove St., Salem.
