Obituary of Charlie Hiou

Charlie Hiou, 79, of Peabody, died Sunday morning at Care One at Peabody following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Virginia (Chigas) Hiou. Born in Samos, Greece, he was the son of the late George and Alexandra Hiou. He was raised and educated in Greece and immigrated with his family at the age of 18 and has lived in Peabody ever since. Charles was employed as a glazer in the leather industry and also he enjoyed cooking and was also employed by restaurants in the area before retiring many years ago. He was also proud of the fact the he was featured in the documentary “Leather Soul” depicting the history of the leather industry in Peabody. He enjoyed watching his sons and grandsons play Peabody football as well. Charles is survived by his three sons, Steven Hiou of Abington, George and his wife Pam Hiou and Arthur & his wife Stacy Hiou, all of Peabody, his daughter, Rosemary and her husband Brian Lawrence of Peabody, his brothers, Argeros and his wife Linda Hiou, a sister, and is also survived by six grandchildren, Nicholas, Jason, Christopher, Jonathan, Amanda and Gia. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Angelo and Stavro Hiou. Visiting hours for Charlie will be held on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the American Lung Association, 460 Totten Pond Road Suite 400, Waltham, MA 02451-1991.
