Obituary of Joan M. (McKinley) Scruton

Joan M (McKinley) Scruton, 84, of Ayer and formerly of Lexington and Winchester, died on Wednesday morning with her family by her side following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of the late Earl A Scruton. Born in Framingham, she was the daughter of the late Harold M McKinley Sr and Sarah D (Laraway) McKinley. She was raised and educated in Winchester and upon marrying her husband Earl, moved to Lexington where they raised their 6 sons. While her children were in school, she worked for the Lexington School Department as a cafeteria worker. Once her children had finished school, she continued her employment as a bank teller at Shawmut Bank in Lexington, before finally retiring years ago. Joan enjoyed dancing and met her husband at a USO Dance. She enjoyed ballroom dancing and square dancing as well. She also enjoyed dress making and training dogs. Her favorite endeavor was spending time with her family especially at Great East Lake in Wakefield, NH. Joan is survived by her six sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Patricia Scruton of Framingham, Dwayne and Darlene Scruton of Ayer, Mark Scruton and Lisa Blum of Dracut, Roger and Inez Scruton of Ayer, Donald and Mary Scruton of Newton, NH, and William and Marie Scruton of Chelmsford. She was the grandmother of 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She was the sister of John McKinkley of FL and Judy Snell of VA and sister-in-law of Priscilla Fuller of Pocasset, MA. She was predeceased by her siblings, Harold M. “Bud” McKinley, Jr. and Jean Amico Visiting hours will be held on Saturday from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St.,, Peabody followed by her Funeral Service at 12:00 PM at the funeral home to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
