Obituary of John E Smithers
John E Smithers, 56, of Peabody and formerly of Lynn, died early Tuesday morning at the Kaplan Family Hospice House following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Carla (Curtis) Smithers with whom he shared over 7 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn, he was the son of Edward and Dolores (Landry) Smithers. He was a graduate of Lynn Technical High School, class of 1977.
John was employed for over 37 years as a welder at the General Electric River Works Plant in Lynn. John was an avid cook who enjoyed cooking smoked foods on the barbecue for his family and friends. He was an avid Patriots fan and loved golfing at many of the fine golf courses throughout the North Shore.
Besides his loving wife and parents, he is survived by his son TJ Smithers and his brother Michael Nager, both of Chapel Hill, NC, his step children, Shannon, Lorrie, and Joshua Sweeney, all of Peabody, his brother, Ronnie Smithers of Lynn, his sisters, Debbie Brown, Sue Beatty, and Karen Smithers, all of Lynn and is also survived by his granddaughter, Hailie Rayne Thomas and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Smithers.
Following cremation, a Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. There are no funeral services planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty St., Danvers, MA 01923 or the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
