Obituary of Albert A. "Al" Chaves
Albert A. Al Chaves 80 years, husband of Hedy M. (Gulden) Chaves of Lynn, died Saturday at the Salem Hospital.
Mr. Chaves was born on February 10, 1926 in Danvers son of the late Anthony A. and Jenny (Enos) Chaves. He was raised in Peabody and graduated from Peabody High School class of 1944. He then enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Private with the 86th Infantry Division Anti Tank Company in Central Europe. Following WW II he attended Suffolk University on the G.I. Bill and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English in 1950. In 1950, he was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Army due to the Korean Conflict and served as Corporal with the 7th Army Band while stationed in Germany. He later pursued his education and received his Master in English from Suffolk University. He also had 30 credits from Boston University towards his Doctorate.
Mr. Chaves began his working career as an English Teacher at the Baldwinville Elementary School in 1954. From 1960 until his retirement in 1990, he taught in the same capacity in the North Reading Public School System. He played the trumpet in the Shepwolen Orchestra along with his friends Dr. Vontzalides and Dr. Rizzone during the late 40’ s and early 50’ s. He was an avid reader and traveled extensively throughout the U. S. and Canada.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by a son and his wife, Anthony J. Tony and Janice H. Chaves of Danvers; his grandchildren, Anthony J. and Christina Chaves of Haverhill, Suzanne J., Leanne K. and Matthew R. Chaves all of Danvers and many good friends.
His funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St. location, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Tuesday 2 - 4 & 6 - 8 p.m. Burial in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem.
