Obituary of Candido E. Calisto

Candido E. Calisto, 90, of Peabody, passed away April 3, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Odete N. Cunha (Da Silva) Calisto. Candido was born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, on January 8, 1926, son of the late Candido E Calisto and Lucinda Candida Da Silva. He was raised and educated in Portugal, where he also worked in construction and a farmer, before moving to the United States in Septemeber of 1970. Prior to his retirement he worked as a machine operator in the leather industry in Peabody. He was a member of the Our Lady of Help Society and Azorean Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Ghost, both in Peabody. He was also a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody. Candido lived a life of faith, simplicity, and love. He prayed the rosary every morning and every night, alongside his wife. He enjoyed raising chickens, rabbits, listening to Portuguese folk music and the Portuguese marching band, tending to his garden, in which he took great pride in, but most of all he enjoyed being surrounded by people, whether it was his loving family or just helping out a neighbor. He will be forever missed as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and an overall humble and true gentleman. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Manuel & Helena Calisto of Peabody, Maria Fatima Calisto & Natalino Candido; his grandchildren; Walden Calisto, Craig Calisto, Andra (Calisto) Kakavitsas & her husband Thomas, Kristina (Calisto) Cliffe & her husband Matthew; his great grandchildren; Savannah, Destinee, Avery, & Katie Calisto. He was preceded in death by his siblings Manuel Espinola, Jose Quadros, Faustino Calisto, Georgina Bettencourt, and Silvana Quadros. A Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 7, from 4- 8 P.M. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. Peabody. His funeral will be held on Friday, April 8, at 8A.M. at the funeral home followed by a funeral mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody at 9A.M. He will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
