Obituary of Carl L. Mattioli
Carl Leonard Mattioli, 66, passed away March 31, 2016 at Sunrise Gardner Park in Peabody, his home for the past year.
Carl was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 14, 1949, son of the late Caesar Nicholas Mattioli and Carolina Rutkowska Mattioli. He moved with his family to Paris France when he was 3 and lived there for 12 years until returning to the United States with his family in 1963.
He was a graduate of Cocoa Beach High School in FL. In June 1971 upon graduation from the University of Miami with a BA in Psychology he became a Peace Corps volunteer and was posted to teach English in the Central African nation of Chad. In addition to his Peace Corps assignments he taught English twice weekly in the evenings at a Christian mission with another volunteer. They also established an English library at Abeche. He later served as a trainer and student teacher supervisor in Sarh, Chad. Carl returned to the United States to receive a second degree in French in 1974 at Florida Technological University, now University of Central Florida. He rejoined the Peace Corps, was assigned to teach English to Tunisian secondary school students in Sidi bou Zid for two years. At the invitation of his Peach Corps supervisor, he remained in Tunisia as Cultural Instructor and Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) trainer for new Peace Corps volunteers.
In later years Carl made New England his home and in his free time enjoyed sketching, painting and writing. Over 100 of his letters to the editor were published in papers all over the world, including the Boston Globe, New York Times and Washington Post. Carl was a highly valued Server Associate at the Newton Marriott for almost 30 years. He received many Spirit to Serve Awards as a result of Marriot guests who wrote management about Carl’s exceptional presence and service.
Carl is survived by his mother Carolina Mattioli (96) of Melbourne FL, two brothers Roger Mattioli (Linda Parks) of Washington DC, Vernon Mattioli of Merritt Island FL, cousins Karen Watkins (Michael Welch) of Beverly MA and Michele Pisano (David Gagnon) of Peabody MA, his aunt Florence DeMarco of Brooklyn NY, his uncle Richard Rutkowski of North Lindenhurst NY, many other loving cousins and his old friend Olga Lanza. A Memorial Mass will be held on May 21, 2016 at 4:00 P.M. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 111 New Balch St., Beverly, MA 01915. The family extends their deepest gratitude to our wonderful care family at Sunrise Gardner Park and Care Dimensions Hospice. Donations may be made in his memory to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St. B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
