Obituary of Gerald J "Jerry" Sanphy

Gerald J “Jerry” “Jake” Sanphy, 70, of Peabody, husband of high school sweetheart Judy (Samolchuk) Sanphy with whom he shared 48 years of marriage, died after a long battle with cancer on Tuesday April 26, 2016. Jerry was born in Lynn, July 14, 1945, son of the late Joseph A and Susan (McKinnon) Sanphy and was a life long resident of Peabody. He was a member of the first graduating class of Bishop Fenwick High School in 1963. Following high school, he briefly attended Boston College before enlisting into the United States Marine Corps. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam prior to receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1967. Jerry began his working career in heavy equipment and was later employed for 33 years at Verizon until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the VFW in Swampscott, IACC in Peabody and the Peabody Lodge of Elks 1409. He played on the Elks Championship Softball teams for many years and was an avid golfer and member of the Wenham Country Club. In addition to his wife, Jerry is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Diandra Sanphy of Hampton, NH, a daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl and Todd Carter of Maui, HI; 3 loving grandchildren, Ashley, Jake, and Emma, great grandson Michael; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph “Bud” McKinnon of P.E.I Canada. Jerry’s family will receive relatives and friends at a memorial visitation on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. His Funeral will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. In lieu of flowers, please engage in “a random act of kindness” to commemorate Jerry’s life.
