Obituary of Charles F. Harkins Sr.

Charles F. Harkins Sr., 77, of Beverly MA died peacefully on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at the Beverly Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Peabody, Ma on October 20, 1938 the son of the late Francis B. and Elizabeth V. (Journee) Harkins and was raised and educated there graduating from Peabody High School in 1956. He then entered the Mass National Guard where he served for 6 years in the Field Artillery Unit. He began working as a machinist at the United Shoe Machine Corp. in Beverly for many years. Later he was the area manager for Suffield Oxygen in the North Shore area for 20 years prior to his retirement. Charlie was an outstanding candle pin bowler where he played for many leagues in Peabody and Beverly. He also loved to hunt throughout New England and also enjoyed fishing, first in the lakes and ponds and later in the ocean catching mackerel and striped Bass. Charles enjoyed gardening in his yard growing tomatoes and dahlias and received great joy in giving the flowers and vegetables to his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by a son, Charles “Chuck” F. Harkins Jr. of Hampstead, NH, two daughters and a son-in-law, Sonja and Jon Browne of Raymond, NH and Kimberly Grzegorczyk of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas L. and Janyce Harkins of Peabody, 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Scott Harkins. A Celebration of Charles Harkins life will be held at a later date.
