Obituary of Poppy (Zantos) Kalivas

Poppy (Zantos) Kalivas, 90 PEABODY – Poppy (Zantos) Kalivas, 90, beloved wife of the late Spero A. Kalivas, died peacefully on Saturday morning June 4, 2016 at the Brudnick Center for Living in Peabody, following a brief illness. Born in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late George and Martha (Jenis) Zantos of Argos, Greece. She grew up in Lynn, and graduated from Lynn Classical High School. Upon marrying, she moved to Peabody with her beloved husband Spero. She was an integral part of the family businesses whenever needed, assisting her husband’s business, Raymond’s Pharmacy, and later helping her son Stephen at Tremont Pharmacy, both in Peabody. She enjoyed extensive travel with her husband, and later often wintered in Boca Raton, FL with her many friends and relatives. Poppy was a lifelong steward of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody. She was involved with numerous activities there, including the Philoptochos Society, St. Vasilios Girl Scouts, the PTA, and even as chairlady of two parish festivals among other ministries. She is survived by a daughter, Jean S. Yokas and her late husband Sotirios of Peabody; a son Stephen S. Kalivas of Peabody; two grandchildren, Sgt. George S. Yokas & his wife Leah of Iowa, and Michael S. Yokas & his partner Matthias of Germany; two great-grandchildren, Luke and Rocky Yokas; a sister, Demetra Digregorio and her late husband Vincent of Revere; a brother Charles and his wife Elizabeth Zantos of Stoughton; a godchild Vinette Digregorio of Winthrop; two sisters-in-law Artemis Kalivas & her late husband George of Peabody, and Theodora “Lola” Kalivas and her late husband Christ of Peabody. Poppy was predeceased by her sister-in-law Cally (Kalivas) and her late husband Chris Sarbanis of Danvers. She also leaves many cherished and very special nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Wednesday June 8, 2016 at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 lynn St, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Service at 10 AM in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody. A visitation will be held on Tuesday June 7, 2016, from 4 – 8 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Vasilios Endowment Fund, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody MA 01960.
