Obituary of William "Billy" Tournas

William “Billy” Tournas, 93 PEABODY – William “Billy” Tournas, 93, beloved husband of Anna (Kokalis) Tournas, died peacefully at his home on Monday June 27, 2016, while in the comforting presence of his family. Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Alexander and Helen (Christakis) Tournas. He grew up in Salem where he attended schools before enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II. He served as a Carpenter’s Mate and was stationed in the Pacific Theater. After the war, Mr. Tournas worked in several leather companies, including Korn Leather, before his 30 year career at J.B. Thomas Hospital in Peabody, where he was a Stationary Fireman. He also worked for 30 years as a Clubhouse Attendant at Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton/Danvers, retiring in 2009. Bill enjoyed sports, and was a lifetime golfer. He enjoyed spectator sports such as the Patriots and Red Sox. He also enjoyed watching old Western movies, and listening to Big-Band music. He was a member of the St. Vasilios Men’s Club, and a Lifetime Member at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church in Peabody. He is survived by his wife, Anna (Kokalis) Tournas of Peabody, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage; a son Al & his wife Kathleen Tournas of Westborough; a daughter Kathy & her husband Thomas Leahy, Jr. of South Berwick, ME; three cherished grandchildren that he loved dearly, Julianne Tournas, Amy Tournas, and Katie Leahy, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death, besides his parents, by brothers and sisters Pauline, James, Charles, Spacia, Bella, Angelo, Loretta McIntyre, and Peter. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Thursday June 30, 2016 at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Service at 10 AM in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6 – 8 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
