Obituary of Lulu Rose (Silva) (Costa) Smith

Lulu Rose (Silva) (Costa) Smith PEABODY – Lulu Rose (Silva) (Costa) Smith, 81, died peacefully early Saturday morning July 2, 2016 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, while in the comforting presence of her family. Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late John S. and Anna (Mendonca) Silva. She was a lifelong resident of the city, and graduated from Peabody High School, Class of 1952. She was a secretary at the former Remis Furniture Company, and later with Verza Tanning Company of Peabody. She was with the Leather Workers Union and eventually the Mass Leather Workers Pension Fund for 45 years. She was also active in the AFL/CIO Union. Lulu cherished her family, was a wonderful mother, grandmother and was grateful for their love and affection, as well as spending time with them and her dear friends. She will be dearly missed. She is survived by a daughter Donna Costa of Peabody; four grandchildren, Dawne M. Vincent & her husband Lucas of Salem, Brian M. Phelan & his wife Anne-Marie of Lynn, Donald Costa and David Costa both of FL,; four great-grandchildren, Hannah-Rose, Rebekah, Eva, and Eben-James, a daughter-in-law Darlene Costa of FL, and several nieces and nephews, plus special thanks for her cherished friends who were her caregivers, Karen Sikorski, Lisa Matrundola, and Dena Smith. She was preceded in death by her 19-year companion James Sawyer last month, her husband Wendell “Chap” Smith and her first husband Antonio Costa, her two sons Donald Costa and Antonio “Tony” Costa; a brother Manuel Silva and sister Dorothy Silva. The family also would like offer a special thank you to the Care Dimensions angels that took care of Lulu, Karen McGrath, Kara Cheeks, and Billy-Jean. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather for her Funeral Service on Thursday July 7, 2016 at 10 AM in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 – 8 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial donations may be made to Care Dimensions, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923. P
