Obituary of Margaret E. "Peggy" (McLaughlin) Toomey
Margaret E. “Peggy” (McLaughlin) Toomey, 94, of Peabody, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at the Penacook Place Nursing Home in Haverhill with her loving daughters by her side. Peggy was the devoted wife of the late Joseph Toomey with whom she shared over 73 years of marriage. Peggy was born in Peabody on September 5, 1921 the daughter of the late James and Anne (Kelley) McLaughlin, she was raised and educated in Peabody and was a lifelong resident of the city. Peggy was employed as a quality controller at GTE Sylvania Loring Avenue Plant until her retirement in 1986. She was a loving mother who created a home for her family and who enjoyed spending precious time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and her great great granddaughter. Peggy was a member and quite active with St. John’s Ladies Sodality, the American legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 153 and the Golden Agers, and as hobbies she enjoyed line dancing, bowling and reading. Peggy is survived by her two daughters, Anne Billert and her husband Ted Smolen of Georgetown, and Tricia Shaw and her husband Jim Anderson of Beverly, her six grandchildren, Peter and Cheryl Billert, Sean and Mary Billert, Brian Billert and Elaine MacFarlane, and Faith Cappotto, and Nicole and Matthew Shaw, her nine great grandchildren, Kyle, Kalin, Alexandra, PJ, Alyssa and Brooke Billert, Noah and Jeffrey Cappotto, and Dante Shaw, and is also survived by a great great granddaughter, Olivia Billert; and by many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her siblings Kathleen Moore, Francis, James, Terrence, Robert and Thomas McLaughlin. Her family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, August 2nd from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at 82 Lynn St., Peabody followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 16 Church St., Peabody. Her burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org/MANH .
